Survival in a hollow tree

My Grandfather was in the Cavalry in the First World War. His middle name was Reece and his surname was Smith. There were so many Smith's, they changed his name to Reece-Smith.

He lost his horse, so he stole a donkey from a nearby farm to escape. They were being gassed and he didn't have a gas mask, so he hid inside a hollow tree.

Bless him, he survived but did not like to talk about the war years.
